“Then, spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the Light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12, KJV)

We walked into Trader Joe’s shopping for groceries for the upcoming daily festivities.

After we were done with our selection, we walked to the cashier counters to check out.  I stood back and looked at each of the cashiers to see which one would be the one God would have me tell about Jesus.

I looked at a young man. He looked rough, but I wanted to give it a try. He was talking to a customer. As he talked, I saw that he seemed rather dark in personality to approach. It kind of caused me to draw back, but I still wondered if he was the one I should talk with.

While I was thinking about it, the line of customers at his register got longer. So, I had to go to the cashier to the right of us. She seemed approachable. I thought it would be easier to talk with her. So, I began to walk to that cashier counter. But as soon as I did, she started to wrap up her shift. She began to count the money in the cashier box and close it out. At the same time, another cashier, who was a young American girl, walked up. It was her shift now.

I thought, “Oh no, this one is going to be hard to approach about Jesus!” Her hair was green, lavender, and pink. She wore a scarf wrapped around it that looked old and was multicolored. Christmas tree red bulb ornament earrings hung from her ears. “Oh my, what will I say to this girl!”

I looked at her nametag and asked, “How do you say your name?”

She smiled and answered.

“That’s a very unique and interesting name,” I said.

“Thank you,” she replied.

“You look like you are going to light up for Christmas,” I said.

“I am!” Suddenly the red bulbs hanging from her ears began to go off and on.

“You sure are!” I laughed.

“Now what do I say, Lord? Help me,” I thought.

“Ah, what are you doing for Christmas?” I asked.

“I’m going to be bedridden. I have to have surgery on my ankle. It just so happened that a surgeon came to my area of town just at the same time that I needed this.” She explained.

I thought, “Someone is praying for this girl.”

She continued. “But I have friends who will come to see me. That will make things very nice.”

“Yes, it will. That is very special. You know who is watching over you?” I asked. She pointed up.

“That’s right,” I said. “Do you know who He is?”

“God,” she answered.

“Yes, it is. And do you know who is watching over the specific details of your life?” I asked.

“Jesus?” She asked.

“Exactly!” I answered. “Have you asked Him to be your Saviour? You will not be able to go through what you will have to without Him,” I told her.

“No, I have not,” she replied.

“Would you like for me to help you ask Him?”

“Yes, I would like for you to,” she answered.

I went around the counter to get closer to her, and before I could put my hand on the cart, much to my surprise, she slipped her sweet, soft hand into mine. It felt so good. I looked at the customer behind me. She was distracted with something, looking all around the store. “Thank You, Lord,” I thought.  I began to pretend I was looking at all my groceries and pulled them out to look at each one as we prayed, so that she would not get in trouble. She confessed Jesus as her Saviour at the cross, received His love for her, and gave her life to Him for His glory.

When we were done, she smiled sweetly and thanked me. I looked at her eyes, and they were sparkling, full of light! She looked very calm and assured of her decision. The work of the Holy Spirit was done for the salvation of her soul. I was still in such surprise about her softly slipping her hand in mine to pray.

Someone had been praying and laboring for this young girl’s soul. Halleluiah! That prayer and labor had been answered! Her soul was saved! Glory to Jesus!

I walked to the car in surprise and with tears, my heart rejoicing for what God had just done.

“Abba, I was looking on the outside, but You were looking on the inside. As my tears fall on my face, I am so blessed to have seen You, Jesus, save this soul, when I thought that this one would not even listen. Holy Spirit, I thank You for Your gentle way in which You worked in her heart and in mine. I wish I could see the look on the face of the one who has been laboring over her soul! Thank You, Lord, for Your grace and love over me. Thank You for her soft ,sweet hand in mine. That touched my heart so deeply. Yes, this one with multicolor hair and Christmas red-bulb earrings, now has something to LIGHT up about! Glory to the Light of the World—Jesus!”
